How to Get a Professional Headshot for a Fraction of Costs (Without Looking Like an AI Image)

Your profile photo is doing a quiet job every single day.

Before you write a word. Before someone reads your bio. Before they decide whether to connect, book, or buy — your photo has already done its work. Upselling you or downselling you without making a sound.

Most people know this. Most people do nothing about it.

Not because they do not care. Because a proper photographer costs $300 to $500, the calendar never quite lines up, and there is always something more urgent when you are building a business on your own. So the old photo stays. Week after week. Post after post. Quietly working against everything else you are building.

Think about the last time you clicked on someone’s profile. Before you read a single word they wrote, you made a judgment. Probably in under two seconds. Professional or not. Trustworthy or not. Worth my time or not.

Your audience does that to you too. Every single day.

That was exactly where my friend Amara found herself.

My friend Amara

runs a life coaching side hustle out of Calgary. Warm, sharp, the kind of person who remembers details about everyone she meets. Her clients love her. Her content is good. But coaching is still her second income, not her main one. Every dollar she spends on the business has to earn its place before she spends it.

We were talking one afternoon and I brought up her headshot. She laughed it off the first time. Said it was not a priority right now.

I let it go. Then I brought it up again.

Second time she pushed back harder. “I have seen those AI photos, Wil. The eyes look wrong. The skin looks plastic. I would rather keep the old one than put something fake out there.”

The fear is legitimate. There are a lot of bad AI images out there — the glassy eyes, the too-smooth skin, the slightly uncanny expression. If that was all she had seen, of course she would say no.

What I told her is what I want to tell you now. Most people who end up with those bad results were using the wrong tool for the job. There are two completely different things AI can do here, and mixing them up is exactly why so many people end up disappointed.

I walked her through both. She went away, spent $35, uploaded a handful of her own photos, and came back to check in 30 minutes later.

There she was. Frozen. Dumbfounded. Over 40 professional headshots of herself staring back at her, majestically, ready to choose from. She texted me that evening. “Omg. I now see what you mean. This is something else. I love it.”

The very next day that photo was on her LinkedIn, her coaching website, and her Instagram. It looks like she paid $500 for it. She spent $35 and thirty minutes of her time.

Here is the distinction that will save you a lot of frustration.

Know the differences: There Two Different Tools for Two Different Jobs

  • Job #1 is generating professional human figures for your content. Blog hero images. Newsletter banners. Social media posts. Presentation slides. You need a professional-looking person in the frame but it does not need to be you. ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Adobe Firefly, and Microsoft Designer all handle this well. Free or already included in tools you pay for. You describe what you want and they generate it.
  • Job #2 is your actual profile headshot. LinkedIn. Website About page. Instagram profile. Anywhere people will see the real you. This cannot be a randomly generated person. It has to look like you. And for this, ChatGPT and Firefly are the wrong tools — they have no idea what you look like. They will generate someone who matches your description, not your actual face.

For Job 2 you need a platform that trains on your actual photos. You upload real images of yourself. The AI learns your face, your features, your skin tone, your bone structure. Then it generates professional headshots that genuinely look like you.

That is exactly what Amara did. She did not type a description of herself into ChatGPT. She uploaded her own photos to a dedicated platform and the AI trained on her actual face.

Let’s break it down for clarity:

Part 1 — The Free Options for Content Visuals

For blog images, newsletter headers, and social posts where you just need a professional human figure, here is the prompt that consistently produces clean, natural results.

Paste this into ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Adobe Firefly, or Microsoft Designer. Fill in the brackets with details that fit your content:

Photorealistic horizontal image, 16:9 ratio.
A [gender, age] professional — e.g. Black woman mid-30s,
South Asian man early 40s — casual professional attire.
Setting: clean modern workspace, minimal desk,
laptop open, soft natural light from the left.
Expression: focused and engaged, not looking at camera,
caught in a genuine moment of work.
Editorial photography style. Cinematic depth of field.
No stock photo stiffness. Real, not staged.
--ar 16:9

Run it two or three times. Pick the result that fits the story you are telling. That is your hero image.

You can adjust the theme by adding one sentence to the prompt:

  • For AI or tech content, add: “Laptop screen showing a simple workflow or dashboard. Subject studying the screen with slight curiosity.”
  • For productivity or planning content, add: “Notebook with handwritten notes beside the laptop. Morning light. Coffee cup in frame.”
  • For finance or business content, add: “Spreadsheet or simple charts visible on screen. Expression thoughtful and focused.”
  • For coaching or wellness content, add: “Bright airy space, plants visible in the background, subject in a relaxed but professional pose.”

There are many AI tools to use, the common ones are

  • ChatGPT image generation ,
  • Google Gemini image generation, which is strong on skin tones and photorealism, or
  • Adobe Firefly which is already included if you have any Adobe subscription, and
  • Microsoft Designer which is already in Windows 11 and Microsoft 365 — most people have it and i bet never opened it (:))

Ten minutes. Free. Repeat every time you need a content visual.

Part 2 — Your Real Profile Headshot with Aragon AI

There might be many out there, but so far quality and cost effective, the best platform for personal professional AI-generated headshots right now is Aragon AI.

Built by researchers from Meta and Microsoft. Consistently produces results that are indistinguishable from professional studio photography — natural skin tones, proper lighting, believable backgrounds. A one-off fee of $35 for 20 or more professional headshots, delivered in 30 to 45 minutes. That is roughly one tenth of what a photographer in Calgary charges.

Here is how it works, start to finish.

  • Go to aragon.ai and create your account. Select the Starter plan at $35.
  • Upload 10 to 15 clear, recent photos of yourself. Phone selfies work perfectly. What matters is variety, different angles, different lighting, no sunglasses or heavy filters, no group photos. The AI trains on your actual face, so the quality of what you upload directly determines the quality of what comes back.
  • Choose your style preferences. Aragon gives you options for backgrounds, outfits, and lighting. Corporate or executive if you want a dark neutral background and formal attire. Modern professional if you want clean light background and business casual. Creative or startup if you want a more relaxed contemporary feel. Outdoor or natural if you want blurred greenery and warm light. Pick two or three that match how you want to show up.

Wait 30 to 45 minutes. Go make yourself some coffee.

Come back to your results and behold! your 20 to 40 headshots staring at you like magic.

Really great looking! But as human, we demand extraordinary always, so the honest take is this: Expect roughly half to be genuinely strong picks while the rest are not so superbly it. But hey, who cares, coz you still have authentic professional10 to 20 authentic professional you to choose from — more than what a typical photographer session delivers as usable finals.

Next,

  • Tag your favourites and download only those, or download everything in a zip folder.

They also offer bonus luxury shot and an option to edit it right within theirplatform, isnt that cool?

Once you are done getting your besties, go ahead and update your LinkedIn, Website, your social media and Email signature, if you are the types who love to showcase your smile to your readers.

Just like every other new tools, there’s some Honest Limitations

Aragon is the best in the category right now. But it is not perfect. Here are few things to take note of:

  • Output quality depends on your input photos. Blurry selfies, poor lighting, or too few photos all produce weaker results. Give it 12 to 15 clear, recent, varied photos and the output improves significantly.
  • Not every headshot in the batch will be strong. Review carefully and delete the ones where something looks slightly off. The strong results are very strong. The weak ones are usually obvious.
  • Be honest with yourself and pick the closest looks that just looks like you my friend. Your profile is not AI profile, it needs to look like you on a good day, not better than you or like your imaginary self. If the result looks so polished it no longer resembles the person who shows up on a video call, dial it back. Pick the headshots that genuinely look like you.

Where to Use Your New Headshot, something you already know, but let me just say it again..

  • LinkedIn profile photo needs 400 by 400 pixels minimum, square crop.
  • Your website About page needs 800 by 800 pixels minimum.
  • Instagram and Facebook profiles need 320 by 320 pixels minimum.
  • Your email signature needs around 100 by 100 pixels.
  • Your LinkedIn newsletter banner needs 1920 by 1080 pixels in horizontal 16:9 format.

If you got the time, do it all in one sitting. Consistency across platforms is the point.

What to Do Next

  • Get some content visuals generated right now after reading this: Go open ChatGPT, Gemini, Firefly, or Microsoft Designer. Copy the prompt above and adjust the description to fit your topic. Generate, pick the best, download. May takes only 10 minutes or so.
  • For your actual profile headshot, go to aragon.ai, select the $35 Starter plan, gather 10 to 15 clear recent photos of yourself, upload them, choose your style, wait 30 to 45 minutes. Download your favourites. Update your profile. Done!

The photo from 2019 has had its run. Time to retire it, my friend.
